Common Pesticides Found in Flea & Tick Products

Pyrethroids:  Most common use in spot-on flea and tick products
  • Causes insect to become paralyzed and then die
  • Approved by EPA, but linked to poisoning, kidney failure, brain damage, and death
  • Bad for the Environment - must be careful howyou dispose of application, as it is toxic to beneficial insects and fish
  • Natural pyrethrods include Pyrethin, Allethrin, and Resmethrin.  These are made from pyrethrum, the olesoresin extract of dried chrysanthemum flowers
  • Synthetics include Cypermethrin, Permethrin, and Phenothrien.  These are synthesized derivatives.
  • Used in Frontline, Zodiac, Defend, Bio Spot, Adams and Advantage
Organophosphates:  Used in Flea Collars, Fly, Ant & Roach baits as well as topical flea products.
  • They inhibit function in nerve cells.
  • Acute toxicity poses risk to peopleexposed to large amounts
  • Most common cause of poisoning (in people) worldwide.
  • Chronic effects have been noted, in particular affecting neurotransmitters.
  • Products containing this chemical usually come with very strong warning statements because of the high risk.
Neonicotinods:  Including Nitenpyram, which is found in Capstar tablets.
  • Kill adult fleas by acting on the central nervous system of insects (lower toxicity to mammels).
  • Blocksa neral pathway that is more abundant in insects than animals
  • Among the mostwidely used insecticides world wide
Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) is a pesticide synergist
  • It is used in conjunction with an insecticide and prevents the immune sstem of the insect from removing the toxin from the body
  • The combination of the two chemicals is lethal to the insect
Neem Oil
  • Vegetable oil pressed from the fruits and seeds of an Indian evergreen tree
  • Biopesticide, similar to citronella, it does not kill but repels
  • 3-4 times more expensive than citronella oil but no studies to prove that it is any more effective
Citonellla Oil
  • Plant based insect repellent, comes from the leaves and stems of Cymbopagan
  • In a 60-year period, the EPA hashad no reports of adverse effects of citronella as a topical insect repellent
  • It is non-toxic; so, while it does not kill insects,it repels them from causing irritation in the first place.  It also has very strong anti-fungal properties.

We are not advocating that you cease your regular flea and tick treatment program.  We have chosen to do so with our dogs and have instead gone to more natural flea and tick preventation.  This is a personal decision that only should be made after doing extensive research and weighing the environmental factors where you live and the exposure of your dog.

We do carry these products for natural flea and tick repellent.

Dirty & Harry's Repel products contain Citronella Oil for its flea repellent properties.

Earth Animal Internal Powder is a Natural Flea & Tick Prevention Dietary Supplement for dogs and cats.
