by | | 0 comment(s)

A Goldendoodle is a dog hybrid between a golden retriever and a poodle. Their typical weight can be anywhere between 45 and 100 pounds, but some of these furry friends can weigh as little as 15 pounds. Their coat is often shaggy and curly, with hues that vary from one dog to another. If you are curious as to why there has been a crossbreed between a golden retriever and a poodle, then read on.

History of the Goldendoodle

Famous Stories

There have been so many stories surrounding how the Goldendoodles came into being. Perhaps one of the most popular ones involves a small breeding kennel in Oregon wherein a certain woman researches therapy dogs, particularly for the blind. But then she also needed to consider persons who are known to have allergies to dogs. In an attempt to address both challenges, the woman invited a golden retriever from a neighboring farm to breed with her poodle. With the low shedding of poodles and the excellent temperament of a golden retriever, she was able to generate the perfect guide dog for a blind man with allergies.

Documented Stories

With further research, it can be noted that documents date that a golden retriever and a poodle were first bred in the late 1960s in an attempt to generate guide dogs. This was inspired by the successful crossbreed between a Labrador and a poodle, which paved the way for the emergence of the Labradoodle hybrid. However, in the 90s, this crossbreed gained so much popularity because of the non-shedding coat characteristic of a poodle, combined with the desirable temperament of a golden retriever.

Development of the Breed

Over the years, Goldendoodles have served as agility, guide, and therapy dogs, and some were even trained to become search and rescue dogs. Some Goldendoodles have wiry and curly hair, much like that of a poodle. Others have a shaggier coat like a golden retriever, but it is often the case that their fur is somewhere in between. While they don’t shed excessively, the dog lovers behind Pride and Prejudoodles suggest that you should still brush them regularly. This will ensure that any dead hair is removed and that any nasty matting is mitigated. This will also keep their coat clean and healthy.

Another great characteristic of Goldendoodles is that they are obedient and smart, making them easier to train. Their agility also comes naturally, which makes it easy for them to burn energy as they are undergoing training. Nevertheless, as long as Goldendoodles are bred responsibly, they will be in their best health possible. Because they are hybrid, health problems are greatly reduced due to the diversity of their genetics.

To wrap things up, it can be quite interesting to have a Goldendoodle for a pet because of their enticing characteristic, which can be attributed to their ancestors. However, just like with any other dog breeds, you need to ensure that you give them the proper care and attention that they deserve. Rest assured that they are one of the best companions that you can hope for, and they will give you back the love that you have given them.
